Blue Marble Health PDF Download. Download free ebook of Blue Marble Health in PDF format or read online by Peter J. Hotez 9781421420462 Published on 2016-08-02 by JHU Press

In 2011, Dr. Peter J. Hotez relocated to Houston to launch Baylor’s National School of Tropical Medicine. He was shocked to discover that a number of neglected diseases often associated with developing countries were widespread in impoverished Texas communities. Despite the United States’ economic prowess and first-world status, an estimated 12 million Americans living at the poverty level currently suffer from at least one neglected tropical disease, or NTD. Hotez concluded that the world’s neglected diseases—which include tuberculosis, hookworm infection, lymphatic filariasis, Chagas disease, and leishmaniasis—are born first and foremost of extreme poverty. In this book, Hotez describes a new global paradigm known as |blue marble health,| through which he asserts that poor people living in wealthy countries account for most of the world’s poverty-related illness. He explores the current state of neglected diseases in such disparate countries as Mexico, South Korea, Argentina, Australia, the United States, Japan, and Nigeria. By crafting public policy and relying on global partnerships to control or eliminate some of the world’s worst poverty-related illnesses, Hotez believes, it is possible to eliminate life-threatening disease while at the same time creating unprecedented opportunities for science and diplomacy. Clear, compassionate, and timely, Blue Marble Health is a must-read for leaders in global health, tropical medicine, and international development, along with anyone committed to helping the millions of people who are caught in the desperate cycle of poverty and disease.

Public Health Law PDF Download. Download free ebook of Public Health Law in PDF format or read online by Lawrence O. Gostin,Lindsay F. Wiley 9780520958586 Published on 2016-02-02 by Univ of California Press

Lawrence O. Gostin’s seminal Public Health Law is widely acclaimed as the definitive statement on public health law at the turn of the twenty-first century. In this bold third edition, Gostin is joined by Lindsay F. Wiley to analyze major health threats of our time such as chronic diseases, emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, bioterrorism, natural disasters, opiod overdose, and gun violence. The authors draw on constitutional law, administrative law, local government law, and tort law to develop their conception of law as a tool for protecting the public’s health. The book creates an intellectual framework for modern public health law and supports that framework with illustrations of the scientific, political, and ethical issues involved. In proposing innovative solutions for the future of the public’s health, Gostin and Wiley’s essential study provides a blueprint for public and political debates to come. New issues covered in this edition: • Corporate personhood rights raised in response to regulations of tobacco, food and beverages, alcohol, firearms, prescription drugs, and marijuana. • Local government authority to protect the public’s health. • Deregulation and harm reduction as modes of public health law intervention. • Taxation, spending, and alteration of the socioeconomic environment as modes of public health law intervention. • Access to health care as a strategy for protecting the public’s health. • Taxation, spending, licensing, zoning, and shared-use strategies for chronic disease prevention. • The public health law perspective on violence and injury prevention. • Health justice as a framework for reducing health disparities and protecting the public’s health.

Big Data, Health Law, and Bioethics PDF Download. Download free ebook of Big Data, Health Law, and Bioethics in PDF format or read online by I. Glenn Cohen,Holly Fernandez Lynch,Effy Vayena,Urs Gasser 9781108153645 Published on 2018-03-08 by Cambridge University Press

When data from all aspects of our lives can be relevant to our health - from our habits at the grocery store and our Google searches to our FitBit data and our medical records - can we really differentiate between big data and health big data? Will health big data be used for good, such as to improve drug safety, or ill, as in insurance discrimination? Will it disrupt health care (and the health care system) as we know it? Will it be possible to protect our health privacy? What barriers will there be to collecting and utilizing health big data? What role should law play, and what ethical concerns may arise? This timely, groundbreaking volume explores these questions and more from a variety of perspectives, examining how law promotes or discourages the use of big data in the health care sphere, and also what we can learn from other sectors.

The Politicization of Safety PDF Download. Download free ebook of The Politicization of Safety in PDF format or read online by Jane K. Stoever 9781479805648 Published on 2019-02-26 by NYU Press

A look at gun control, campus sexual assault, immigration, and more that considers the future of responses to domestic violence Domestic violence is commonly assumed to be a bipartisan, nonpolitical issue, with politicians of all stripes claiming to work to end family violence. Nevertheless, the Violence Against Women Act expired for over 500 days between 2012 and 2013 due to differences between the U.S. Senate and House, demonstrating that legal protections for domestic abuse survivors are both highly political and highly vulnerable. Racial and gender politics, the move toward criminalization, reproductive justice concerns, gun control debates, and political interests are increasingly shaping responses to domestic violence, demonstrating the need for greater consideration of the interplay of politics, domestic violence, and how the law works in people’s lives. The Politicization of Safety provides a critical historical perspective on domestic violence responses in the United States. It grapples with the ways in which child welfare systems and civil and criminal justice responses intersect, and considers the different, overlapping ways in which survivors of domestic abuse are forced to cope with institutionalized discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, and immigration status. The book also examines movement politics and the feminist movement with respect to domestic violence policies. The tensions discussed in this book, similar to those involved in the #metoo movement, include questions of accountability, reckoning, redemption, healing, and forgiveness. What is the future of feminism and the movements against gender-based violence and domestic violence? Readers are invited to question assumptions about how society and the legal system respond to intimate partner violence and to challenge the domestic violence field to move beyond old paradigms and contend with larger justice issues.

Corporate Safety Compliance PDF Download. Download free ebook of Corporate Safety Compliance in PDF format or read online by Thomas D. Schneid 9781420066494 Published on 2008-04-22 by CRC Press

Safety and health professionals face potential legal and ethical issues on an almost daily basis. In a landscape of changing responsibilities and new laws, they often make difficult decisions that can result, in hindsight, in the creation of legal issues and liabilities for themselves and their companies. Written by occupational health and safety expert Ton Schneid, Corporate Safety Compliance: OSHA, Ethics, and the Law provides guidance though the maze of legal issues involving OSHA and OSHRC and how to avoid potential legal liability. Tackling safety and ethical issues head on, Schneid explores issues in criminal liability for individuals and corporations under the OSHA Act and state criminal codes. He includes methods for achieving and maintaining OSHA compliance, using specific case studies to illustrate ways to avoid or minimize the impact of legal issues. The text addresses not only OSHA regulations and standards but also the legal aspects up to and including OSHRC decisions on specific issues. Additionally, the author examines the ethical issues involved in many of the legal aspects of the safety issues as well as ethical issues in the day-to-day management of safety and health. The mere mention of the word OSHA scares many people. Often, OSHA has been the much maligned federal agency that was the brunt of attacks from both management and labor organizations. Tom Schneid elucidates the potential legal and ethical issues of the new industrialized workplace. His proactive approach helps you avoid or minimize potential liabilities, where possible, but also gives you the tools to be prepared and knowledgeable in the unique appellate process with OSHA and the OSHRC.

Disputes and Dilemmas in Health Law PDF Download. Download free ebook of Disputes and Dilemmas in Health Law in PDF format or read online by Ian R. Freckelton,Kerry Anne Petersen 9781862875531 Published on 2006 by Federation Press

This book replaces the successful Controversies in Health Law. Under the same editorship and much the same authorship, it is substantially larger (30 chapters instead of 18) and correspondingly more comprehensive. It retains the lively analysis and the focus on controversial and cutting-edge problems. The chapters are broken up into parts covering Litigation and Liabilty; Reproductive Technologies; The Sequelae of the End of Life; Public Health; Ethical Frameworks and Dilemmas; Regulation; Human Rights and Therapeutic Jurisprudence; Research and Vulnerability and Information, Privacy and Confidentiality . They consider issues raised by new technologies, changing legislation and altering community expectations; by new regulatory processes for medicine and all of the health professions; by the fundamental changes to civil liability for medical negligence; by the fierce debate over the role of coroners. Disputes and Dilemmas in Health Law covers questions on property in human tissue and on the ethical and legal aspects of the genetics revolution; provides a modern take on |old| issues such as reproductive law; takes account of changes relating to expert evidence; and discusses how difficult cases in relation to psychiatric injury and wrongful life are pushing compensability to its edges.

Management Obligations for Health and Safety PDF Download. Download free ebook of Management Obligations for Health and Safety in PDF format or read online by Gregory W. Smith 9781439862797 Published on 2016-04-19 by CRC Press

In recent years, the safety management field has placed leadership and commitment at the center of effective workplace health and safety programs. At the same time, personal liability for workplace health and safety has increased, resulting in poor outcomes for individual managers. Discussing the minimum expectations that courts and tribunals have of managers, Management Obligations for Health and Safety examines the relationship between those expectations and effective safety performance. The book looks at safety management from the perspective of management obligations. What expectations are placed on managers at all levels of an organization to ensure that the workplace and systems of work are safe, and how are these expectations considered and analyzed by courts and public inquiries? As importantly, the book explores how management actions in relation to these obligations and expectations influence, positively or negatively, the safety performance of an organization. With examples drawn from legal and quasi-legal processes, one of the more enlightening and thought-provoking features of this book is the extensive use of cross examination taken from various proceedings. No one person reacts the same to finding him- or herself responsible for managing the aftermath of a death at work, or having to deal with the immediate pressure of being subject to interviews and investigation by safety regulators (much less the drawn-out experience of the legal process), but one of the most constant reactions is |Why didn’t anybody tell me about this?| Stressing the importance of safety culture, this book details the true nature of the expectations that are placed on managers by virtue of their obligation to provide a safe workplace.
